Fishbowl

A method for giving and receiving feedback in a group.

< 20 pers.

30 – 45 min.

Outline

After finishing a stage in the course, four participants volunteer and sit down in a circle in the centre of the room to review what has been done. One chair in the circle remains empty representing the rest of the group. The rest of the group sit around this centre circle. The four persons sitting in the centre start reflecting on what has happened – how they feel about it, what are the main achievements, what questions remain unanswered, what doubts exist, etc. After a while the feed back process is declared open and other participants can add to what has been said by taking a seat on the empty chair.

Comment

This method is appropriate for groups that have reached a certain level of trust and who have some practice in giving and receiving feed back.
